Pioneer Heritage Park

Every so often I actually read the newspaper in a timely fashion.  I was so glad I did on Sunday.  There was a full-page ad from Jon Huntsman, Sr., inviting the community to a free day at the Pioneer Heritage Park and free ice cream at the Huntsman Hotel inside.  I decided to take the boys after lunch if there weren’t hordes of people there.  I was pleasantly surprised to see it not so busy although one of the volunteers told us the morning had been absolutely crazy with crowds.

They petted the baby animals:

Rode the ponies:

They all remembered their hats.  I did not.  I also forgot sunscreen.  After days of rain last week, it didn’t even cross my mind to put any on until I was out there in the sun.  I am really feeling it this morning.  Thank goodness for the shade trees though, or it could have been a lot worse.

We saw the llamas and rode in the horse-drawn wagons:

Churned butter:

Rode in a handcart:

Pulled a handcart:

Saw “This is the Place” monument commemorating the pioneers entry into the Salt Lake Valley:

and saw many pioneer houses (this was by far the largest!):

And ate our free ice cream, rode the train, got free coloring books, played in the play village, learned about the pioneer schoolrooms, visited the church and the blacksmith shop, got completely worn out, and had a great time!

That sounds like so much fun! If we are ever out in Salt Lake City, we may have to go and see it!

I remember visiting this park so many times when I was little. It’s one place I still have yet to take my kids. They want to go really bad! Maybe next time we visit Salt Lake we’ll be able to go.

Now that would have been fun to go to. Looks like you picked the perfect time to go. Do you know if the SLC library still carries Rosetta Stone Language Library in their database? I didn’t see it and I found a post you wrote about it on ldfr board. Thanks!

What a perfectly perfect outing. And it looks like you practically had the place to yourselves. That is the problem we have here. EVERYTHING is crowded all the time.

I didn’t know that park existed, how fun! I’ll have to add that to my list of things to do in Salt Lake. One of these first days we need to spend a few days up there to visit everywhere we want to go.

It looks like your boys had a blast!

I read the paper faithfully every day! We must read different papers. Dang.

Well, it looks like so much fun. We will have to go soon!
