Outdoor Hour #22: Butterflies
We took advantage of temperatures in the 70s yesterday morning and went up to Red Butte Garden. It was so nice to be outside and not be too hot! Our challenge this week was to focus on butterflies, although we didn’t seem to see too many. After reading through Barb’s challenge post today though, I realized we should have just sat and patiently waited and we probably would have been rewarded. Patiently waiting is not one of our strong points however, and sitting around just wasn’t possible, there was too much to go and see!
I haven’t been up to Red Butte in awhile and it was fun to see all the changes from spring to summer. My favorite part was all the lavender. I just love the scent of lavender. Apparently the bees love it as well, we saw so many! The boys are working on Barb’s Nature Journal challenge (30 pages by December) so we sketched the lavender, as well as the pond and the ducks.
We were surprised to meet the Tinman in the children’s garden and a redecorated (since last time) birthday cake.
They ran through the serpent maze
and met a squirrel eating an apple.
We actually saw several squirrels, a lot of ducks, other birds, and tons of bees, but not too many butterflies. Oh well, we’ll just keep looking.
We also saw that a Japanese drumming group was going to be performing there last night, so we went back up with DH after dinner and had a great time, although C said it was WAY too loud. It did rather make your entire body vibrate.

I am glad that we weren’t the only ones to not find any butterflies.
It sure looks like a fun place!
That is a beautiful garden…sorry about the butterflies. I think they were all here. I have some lovely butterfly bushes. They should be returning now that my neighbor cut my butterfly bushes down….(not happy about that one).
I like the Japanese drummers. It is interesting to listen to them.
what a lovely summer day. one of my dearest friends had her wedding reception at red butte. it was so gorgeous there.
i love the lavendar, too.
Looks like a fun place! I have some lavender here in my garden and it smells amazing, so I can imagine how heavenly all that lavender must’ve smelled!
You can check out our butterfly study at my Rose Cottage blog HERE
What a fun garden- I can only imagine the Japanese drummers were very loud (went on the mish there). I will have to visit Red Butte when I come out!
You may not have seen many butterflies but you did see lots of other great stuff! I love the photo of your boys and the lavender….could I use it for the photo of the week this week? Perfect….again.
The thing about butterflies is that it seems to just happen. So lay the groundwork and read about butterflies so when the occasion does come up, and it will, you will be ready to observe and share with the boys.
You are doing a great job!
Barb-Harmony Art Mom (I’m working on my thirty pages too!)
