Airplane unit study

August 2, 2008

Well, so much for the weekly reports I had planned on for the airplane unit study we did in July.  I’ll just put everything we did into a monthly report!

C requested we study airplanes this summer after we studied trains last summer.  So I started researching a little bit and although I ended up buying a short unit study on the Wright Brothers and the history of aviation to guide me (it was only $2.50) we mainly just read lots of books and watched lots of videos we got at our amazing, incredible library.  There was an incredible amount of information input, but we kind of lost our drive to do much written work, so there’s not a lot of output to show here.  But here’s a rundown of what we did:

  • We read a LOT of books.  Read about our favorites in our previous post.  We love to snuggle up on the couch and read.

  • We also saw quite a few videos, here’s a few of our favorites:

  • A did a narration/illustration page on Wilbur Wright and the Wright Flyer.
  • We did a flight timeline with little booklets and labelled an airplane with printables found at Homeschoolshare.com.

(this is a small sampling!)

  • We also played with Little Airport sticker books and learned how to use stencils.

  • We read The Paper Airplane by Fulvio Testa, then made our own paper airplanes to fly outside.

I’m sure I’m forgetting something, but it’s been a great unit study for the summer.  We all learned many new things about airplanes and the people that fly them.

After a short vacation next week, we’ll be ready to jump into a new school year and begin studying the Middle Ages.  I’m excited!
