Reading 2012

So it’s time for a new reading list.  I haven’t joined any reading challenges yet, other than the 52 books in 52 weeks challenge.

I’m sure I don’t read a book a week, but it averages out to about 52 every year and it’s a good way to remind myself that I love to read and that I need to read more for myself!

Here then is my list (which I’m sure I’ll veer off of; just ask me about a certain book I’ve had on my reading list for 4 years without once cracking it open!)  But it’s a good starting point.  Like last year though, it’s heavily weighted towards fiction, so will someone please do me a favor and give me some fabulous nonfiction titles to read?  I love history…and music.

6. The Invention of Hugo Cabret (for boys’ bookclub and so we can see the movie) 2/13
7. In the heart of the sea : the tragedy of the whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick 2/24
8. The House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne (because I’ve never read it and I’m interested after seeing the House in Salem, MA, this fall)

12. Eldorado by Baroness Orczy (read The Scarlet Pimpernel last fall and wanted to read the sequel that figures into the movie)
13. The Greater Journey by David McCullough (got distracted from this last summer after getting to page 30)
14. The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara
15. The History of the Ancient World by Susan Wise Bauer (intended to start this in August but never did)
16.  Curse of the Narrows: The Halifax Disaster of 1917 by Laura MacDonald
17. The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare (to discuss with A for school)
18. The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff (to discuss with A for school)
19. The Silver Branch by Rosemary Sutcliff (ditto)
20. The Lantern Bearers by Rosemary Sutcliff (ditto)
21. Black Ships Before Troy by Rosemary Sutcliff (read aloud with boys)
22. The Wanderings of Odysseus by Rosemary Sutcliff (read aloud with boys) (maybe I should have a whole category devoted to Sutcliff, as we’ll probably read her Arthur books when we hit medieval history next fall)
23. In Search of a Homeland by Penelope Lively (read aloud with the boys)
24. Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell (so I can see the movie)
25. Emma by Jane Austen (re-read because I finally saw the 2009 movie and want to see if I’ll like Emma in the book any better after having seen that movie version)
26. Sallie and Captain Sam (an account of a sea captain and his wife that comes out of DH’s family history in Maine in the 1850s; we picked up the book on our trip back East)
27. Midnight in Austenland by Shannon Hale 3/3
28. Princess Academy 2 by Shannon Hale (when it’s released)
29. Black Beauty by Anna Sewell (audiobook with the boys)
30. Winnie the Pooh by A. A. Milne (audiobook with the boys)
31. Mary Poppins by P. L. Travers (audiobook with the boys)
32. King of the Wind by Marguerite Henry (audiobook with the boys)
33. Freddie and the Dragon by Walter Brooks (audiobook with the boys)
