Outdoor Hour Challenge #27

August 30, 2008

Wow!  For once, we actually found the insect we were searching for–bees in this case!  I knew we had to get out of our yard and go somewhere that actually had flowers, so yesterday afternoon we went up to Red Butte Garden.  I’m so thankful we decided to get a membership up there.  It has been more than worth it for all the nature study we’ve been able to do this year.  And boy, did we see alot of bees!

(And forgive the stem across the picture, it was really sunny and I couldn’t see what kind of pictures I was taking, and this ended up being the best bee picture!)

The boys however were more excited about running around, I guess we’ve been indoors a lot this week and they really needed to burn off some energy.  But we are reading The Bee Tree for Five in a Row this week and next, so we will be learning more about bees and honeymaking.  I did get a (very quick) nature journal entry from each of them.  C was the only one to draw a bee though, the other two did rubbings of apple tree leaves.

And they had fun playing inside the weeping mulberry tree.

I loved all your photos this week. 🙂 The more I learn about bees, the more I appreciate how wonderful they are as a piece of the complex web of life we have in our world. Truly amazing.

    Thanks for sharing your photos,
