Weekly Report 2

August 14, 2009

Another week down, which went surprisingly well considering how much we weren’t home!  The highlight of the week was definitely the ultrasound on Monday morning, and we won’t be buying anything pink anytime soon!  We definitely have the formula for little boys figured out. 🙂  I think C has finally overcome his grief at not getting a baby sister.  He had a hard time that day.

They also went to the fire station with scouts Monday afternoon, we went to a pool party with Grandma and Poppa on Wednesday, and Friday was park day.  I really, really love our weekly checklists.  Even with being gone a lot, it was easy to see how much we did accomplish and we essentially got everything important covered.  We were also taking care of Sickie (a.k.a. DH) who had a horrible sinus infection and whose being home can really disrupt the routines.

As far as actual schoolwork is concerned, the highlight was making box planetariums for science and reading our Glow-in-the-dark Constellations book.  We made little black cards for the Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, and Leo constellations and punched holes in them for the stars.  Then the cards went in one end of a shoebox and we shined a flashlight through the other end to project the stars onto the shower wall (the only place that can be completely dark during the daytime.)

A demonstrating (and you can almost see the Big Dipper on the left center tile):

D (Preschool)
2 pages of number tracing and writing 5-20
FIAR: We started rowing Truman’s Aunt Farm and talked about our aunts and what makes an aunt.  We’ll continue with this book next week since we didn’t get too much time with it this week.

C (1st grade)
Math: 8 pages in Developmental Math level 5, doing much practice with place value and learning to count dimes and pennies together
Reading: Lessons 199-203
Grammar: 3 lessons
Writing with Ease 1: 4 lessons in week 2 on Pinocchio

A (3rd grade):
Exercise 25 (dividing with remainders–that took some explaining but he gets it now) and 3 review lessons
Grammar: 3 lessons
Writing with Ease 2: 4 lessons in week 25 on “The Elephant’s Child”

Memory Work: Reviewed “Eletelephony” and even D almost has it, and we started memorizing 1 Nephi 3:7–“And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.”

I’ve debated over whether we should learn the entire verse, or just the key phrase, but I think we’ll aim for whole passages.  I’ve never been really good at memorizing, either for myself or with the kids, and it’s something that I really want to emphasize this year.

History: We read parts of SOTW chapters 2 and 3 about Mary, Queen of Scots, and her son James, did some mapwork for chapter 2 and colored Mary and William the Silent of the Netherlands.

Literature: We’re still reading Seacrow Island and listening to Hans Brinker.  I’m incredibly slow with read-alouds.  A began Harry Potter 2 and C has been reading the rest of the Lighthouse Family series by Cynthia Rylant.

And now the boys are headed to Grandma and Poppa’s overnight so DH and I can celebrate our 12th wedding anniversary tomorrow.  Considering he’s been pretty sick, we have nothing big planned, but at least we can have some good food with no complaints from the little ones and I’m looking forward to not having to get up early tomorrow!

I really love the idea of the checklists. I think I need to make a weekly checklist or schedule so we will be able to see what needs to be done each day.

    Happy Anniversary!
