A Very BIG hole in the ground

October 27, 2010

And a Very BIG tire…

That is the size of the tire on those little dumptrucks way down there that are hauling ore from the Kennecott Copper Mine.

We’re learning about copper and other transition metals this week in science, so Monday afternoon we took a field trip out to the copper mine at the southwest end of the valley.  It’s the largest open pit mine in the world and can even be seen from outer space.

It’s hard to show the size and scope of this place.

The bottom is 3/4 mile down there!

Yes, that is snow, and yes, it was absolutely freezing up there.

That’s an *impressive* hole! I’ll bet it’s a trip they remember for quite some time!
