Just wrapping up…

March 13, 2011

A few of the good things about last week before we head into a new week:

  • A finished Singapore 4A!!  There have been severals times when I never thought we’d see this day.  That book seemed to drag on and on and on…After a pretty horrible test experience on Monday, he flew through the next 2 reviews, hardly missing a thing.  So that proves my point–Never take a math test on Monday!  He got to spend the rest of the week on Life of Fred fractions and this week we’ll delve into 4B and decimals.
  • I spent some good quality teaching time with C and his math (after stressing over not spending enough time teaching math to anyone lately) and successfully had him adding columns of 3 2-digit numbers and carrying to the tens column correctly.  This was another “I never thought I’d see the day” moments.  It was strange but oddly thrilling to watch him do 26 + 48 + 19 and talk his way through it as he went.  I’m so grateful for the opportunity to work with him one on one.  I don’t think math would be his success story if he were in school.
  • C also started cursive this week!  His Pentime book exercises were on the small side and there weren’t nearly enough letters to trace before writing them yourself, so I pulled out the cursive alphabet pages from Learningpage.com for tracing practice.  We’ll use those for a few weeks.

  • D also did some amazing copywork this week.  We still can’t find his Pentime book, so I finally broke down and made my own copywork pages for him using LDS copywork I found online.  If we’re going to write words, we might as well stick to truth.

  • And not to leave out E–He started walking this week!  On Thursday he’d only walk to Mommy, but by today (especially with the huge fuss we make over him) he’ll walk to any and all.  He loves his newfound skill!

We also

  • Talked about the beginnings of communism in China
  • Finished our second to last geography lesson on Paddle to the Sea
  • Studied Christ and a Boy for art appreciation (I think this is my favorite Carl Bloch)

  • Watched The Winslow Boy with DH–good movie!
  • Went with Grandma and Poppa to see Peter and the Wolf with the Utah Symphony and Ballet West

It was a good week, one more and then it’s spring break!

Yay for a good math week! It’s so great when things really start to click. And way to go E! What a fun week.

I’m totally jealous–I’d love to take my boys to see Peter and the Wolf. What a great opportunity!

Oh, this looks like a great week – lots of break-throughs is always fun! Thanks for posting the link to learning pages; I wasn’t familiar with them, and those letter pages are just what we need for extra practice around here. I’m excited to see them!

Hi, What webpage did you you to print out your handwriting practice for D? I love the phrases and saw them but need to plug them onto a worksheet. Denise
