It’s birthday season

November 27, 2011

Starting with my birthday in October, we have birthdays to celebrate in every month until February.  November is D’s month.  Today he turned 7.

Seven!  How can this child be seven already?!  Although he hasn’t been the baby in almost two years, we still think of him as “little D.”  Partly because he’s the third child and no matter how big he gets, he always has two older (and bigger) brothers.

But partly because he started out life so teeny tiny.

He’s our preemie, born at 33 weeks and weighing just 4 lbs. 4 oz.   (Read the whole story here.)

It’s hard to believe that was seven years ago!  I still have such vivid memories of that night…the shock of early labor, the fear for his well-being, the sadness at not being able to hold him right away as he was whisked away to the NICU.  There are some wonderful memories of those next few weeks too: the many acts of service as our ward rallied around us, the strength of the many prayers offered in our behalf, and the joy at D’s progress and ability to come home a mere two weeks after delivery.

How far he has come since!  He is getting so tall.  He is learning more and more every day.  He is a whiz with numbers.  He loves to snuggle up and be read to, and is getting really close to reading himself.  He loves the scripture stories and loves going to Primary.  He loves to cook.  He makes us laugh, always.  I’m really looking forward to this next year and watching him progress even further as he prepares for baptism.

We had a really good day together.  He couldn’t do everything he wanted to as his birthday fell on a Sunday, but we have some plans to get out and about tomorrow.  We let him open a couple of presents before church, because I knew he would want to wear his new tie tack to church.  E was very interested in the presents.  I’m sure this Christmas will be much more exciting than last year.

I think we’re past the days of decorated cakes. (Yay!!)  He just asked for chocolate cupcakes.  I was happy to oblige, although A took over for me and with D helping, did all of the work.  I felt mildly displaced…but it was a good feeling!  I didn’t get a decent picture but just try to imagine a big “7” candle and 6 smaller candles all stuck in one cupcake.  The cupcake was slightly overwhelmed.

After dinner we had more presents.  Our favorite wrapping job was this tall triangular present from Poppa.

It contained 4 markers (that went with a Cars art set) and a plaid shirt rolled up very small!  D thought it was incredibly funny.  He also got dinosaur pjs, Cars 2 on dvd, a second tie tack, and a tiger hat that he thinks will be perfect for when people are trying to get snowballs into his ears!

Happy Birthday D!  Keep on smiling!
