Outdoor Hour Challenge #24: Crickets

August 19, 2008

We’ve gotten a little behind on our outdoor challenges while adjusting to our new school schedule, but we have been focusing on crickets the past few weeks.  It’s hard not to when I open all the windows at night to cool down the house!  So we hear them every night and really got up close and personal with singing crickets while we slept outside in my grandparents’ yard in Idaho a couple weeks ago, although we have yet to actually see one.  So we enjoyed watching the video Barb posted of a cricket singing.

(And is it just me, or can you find just about anything on YouTube?)

Noone was in the drawing mood, so they colored cricket printouts from LearningPage.com and we read a library book about crickets.  We are exceedingly glad we don’t have 6-inch long king crickets to deal with where we live.

On a less positive note, for the cricket anyway, we decided to reread the story of the seagulls that saved the pioneers’ crops from a horde of crickets here in the Salt Lake valley shortly after the pioneers’ arrival.  The seagull is now our state bird.

Glad to see you back, I think I’ve missed seeing your posts….you always find something interesting to do for your study. 🙂

We sleep with our windows open most of the time too and I find it very comforting to hear the crickets outside singing each night. It is sort of worrisome when they all stop at the same time because I *know* some unknown critter is out there disturbing them.

    Thanks for the link,
